As a member of several bands, he has helped popularize genres such as Latin jazz and jazz fusion. He has also impacted up-coming pianists by being one of the first jazz musicians to embrace the use of synthesizers, thus proving that you didn’t have to be classically trained to play jazz. This is just a small list of his achievements in his lifetime.

Corea began playing piano when he was six years old and, within a year, started classical lessons. However, after only one year of classical study, his teacher told him to choose between jazz and Chopin because she couldn’t help him with both. At the time, young Corea chose to play improvised jazz and not classical music because of his lack of classical training. It wasn’t until years later that Corea had the opportunity to study under one of his idols, composer-arranger Gil Evans. He began studying with Evans in 1968 and studied with him up until 1971.

Chick became widely known after he joined Miles Davis’s group in 1968. During this time, he gained international fame with the use of electric piano, which created a whole new sound for jazz music. Corea stayed with Miles Davis’ group until 1971 when he left to start his band called “Return to Forever.” After five successful albums, Corea decided that Return to Forever had run its course and decided to put together a new band called “Elektric Band.”

During 1973 and 1975, Chick released five albums with his electric band and found himself experimenting with electronic sounds. This was not received well by fans. After this short-lived experiment, he returned to acoustic jazz…

A year after returning to acoustic jazz, Corea decided to take another chance and formed a Latin-oriented jazz fusion band called “Corea, Clarke, and White.” This album was more of a success than his previous electric album had been, and he recorded two more albums with the same trio.

Chick Corea’s Influence on Jazz Piano

Chick Corea’s influence on jazz piano is undeniable. His style has influenced many up-and-coming pianists in the jazz genre, including Brad Mehldau, Bill Charlap, The Bad Plus’s Ethan Iverson, and Jason Moran.

Charlie Parker was one of Chick’s biggest influences. He was a big part of why he went to Berklee College of Music in the first place. He was also an inspiration for his early interest in improvisational jazz. Corea states, “My time with Miles Davis and my association with that music turned me on to playing the piano again because I had pretty much abandoned it up to that point.” Another big influence on Chick’s style was one of his biggest idols, Thelonious Monk. “I just loved his incredible way of playing the piano and that sound that he got.” This influence helped him produce a style of music that was very different from what other pianists were doing and is still quite popular today.

Chick Corea is a jazz pianist who has hugely influenced the genre. He is known for his improvisational skills and ability to play various styles. As a member of several bands, he has helped popularize genres such as Latin jazz and jazz fusion.
